A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.‘ Mao Zedong

“No more Blah-Blah-Blah”. Greta Thunberg

Enough of destructive conflict. Let’s shout out for a shared commitment to a shared outcome. We have the opportunity – and responsibility – to rectify and heal – why not co-operate to face our global challenges together? why are we wasting our talents and energies on conflict?

What’s this? Here are 21st. Century pilgrimage routes to highlight the point. They cross national boundaries, visit seats of government, centres of worship. They visit ancient monuments to help us reflect on how far and how fast humanity has developed. On a positive note they also visit great examples of installations in place, projects underway and proposed to make our future more sustainable.

The routes converge on Paris. Why Paris? The sustainable world we dream about comes at a big cost to us all. Have we the will to see this through? The ‘Paris Accord’ of the 2015 COP 21 conference was solemnly ratified by over 190+ nations.

Why tackle a pilgrimage? Life is a journey. A journey of self-discovery, of ongoing learning about the world we live in. Time to think, to learn, to show our resolve. National leaders need clear support to turn those fine words into action.

How can you join in? Make your own way between the waypoints listed, or use the Strava routes identified. Walk any 5 miles of any route, bike 5, 50 or 500. Whichever, use your journey to make the point constructively. No need to glue yourself to the asphalt. Join our WhatsApp group, blog there for all to enjoy, post your pics at the waypoints shown en route. Above all tell all you can about what your journey is about and why you care.

When? Whenever it suite you.

Who can do it? Anyone.

Deliver a message at any or all of those COP Climate Change venues marked in the map. There’s been a quarter century of discussion about what needs doing. OK. We get it. Time for action.

Bike it? Cycling is:-

  • The most energy efficient form of travel yet devised by man. Much much less wasteful than cars – even electric ones. Better than trains, boats and planes. One slice of cake fuels a bike for miles.
  • Health giving. Stay fit with benign low-impact exercise.
  • Sustainable. There’s so little energy expended making a bike. Few ultra-rare elements too. That’s why they cost a small fraction of a car.
  • Minimal maintenance. So little to go wrong. Yes, tyres, brakes, chains eventually wear, but in general, clean your machine, a drop of oil every now and then. Job done.
  • Enduring. No reason to scrap a bike after 10 or 15 years, it’s not like a car! Given a little t.l.c. a 50-year old bike will roll as easily as it ever did.

“A bike ride around the world begins with a single pedal stroke” Scott Stoll

Walk? Walking is:-

  • Unfettered. No need for roads, you can easily deviate off paths or tracks (as permitted of course), up hills no bike can tackle, over stiles, through the undergrowth.
  • Get as close up to nature as you like. Travel slowly, appreciate all those myriad little delights we would otherwise pass by.
  • Safe. Easily route yourself away from those vehicles charging about the roads.
