TREES. Terra Rescue Eco-Engines. Trees Restore Nature. Clean Our Air. Fix Our Climate. Billions have been felled for fuel, for building, for agriculture. The pace is accelerating. Since COP-1 (1995), farming has taken enough new land from nature to cover the combined areas of Germany…plus France…plus Spain.
Each time we spread low-cal ‘butter’ across our toast we are adding to the demand for palm-oil. Huge areas of natures forests have been cleared to produce that.
Each time we eat a burger, meat pie or slice of beef we add to the demand for red meat – huge areas of rainforest are cleared every year to grow the cattle feed that our farms need to import.
Forest clearance doesn’t just sacrifice the trees. With them go the diverse, complex networks of fungi, insects, animals small and large that have taken decades to evolve & can’t be supported by serried monocultured ranks of palm-oil trees or prairies of corn. Stripped of nature’s productive diversity, we resort to applying ever-increasing tonnages of chemical fertilisers, weedkillers, ‘soil improvers’. Or – as that becomes too costly, simply move on when one area, once forest then farmland, has been exhausted. Move on, clear the next area and start afresh. Don’t look back at the damage wrought, after all a natural diverse ecosystem will eventually recover – in a century or three. Maybe.
Our agriculture yield initiative (see Climate Action) aims to make much better use of the land we have already claimed. In the mean time let’s start to repair the damage. Just plant a tree. Or three. Any tree – diversity is key. Let’s make a start somewhere.
If you do plant, why not e-mail any details you’re happy to give* to petersbed@aol.com and we can log it on this website. Then when you’ve done that, see if any of your friends would like to do the same.
*Planter’s name or handle/ species of tree/ where planted/ backstory/ a photo if you like
If you prefer, we can arrange it for you. Go to https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/peter-bedingfield to join in, Just £15 covers the costs of the sapling, the planting and irrigation lines for one tree.
